SINGAPORE — As Singapore gears up for an evolving transport framework, the nation’s rail operators are ramping up efforts to bolster track and power reliability. With significant investments and innovative technology, both SMRT and SBS Transit are working to ensure smoother, safer journeys for commuters.
SMRT’s Track Upgrades
Recently, SMRT made headlines by investing over S$1 million in a cutting-edge welding machine aimed at improving rail track quality. The new flash butt welding machine enhances the consistency of rail joints by accurately aligning segments and fusing them into longer lengths.
- Tracks are now repaired during off-peak hours, from 1:30 AM to 4:30 AM.
- Welding time has been slashed from 40 minutes to just 15 minutes.
- Efficiency has increased by 20% with fewer workers required for operations.
According to Mr Guan Junwei, Deputy Director of Track Infrastructure Maintenance at SMRT Trains, this new system is purpose-built for the constraints of Singapore’s rail network.
SBS Transit’s Power Preemptions
Concurrently, SBS Transit is not resting on its laurels. The operator announced proactive replacement of rectifier transformers on the North East Line (NEL), crucial for ensuring uninterrupted power supply to trains.
- The first rectifier transformer at Potong Pasir station is being replaced ahead of its typical 30-year lifespan.
- Continuous monitoring helps assess performance and risk factors.
- Transformers will be replaced one at a time, ensuring minimal disruption.
CEO Mr Lee Yam Lim emphasised the importance of preventive maintenance, stating, “We’re not going to wait for the transformers to fail…” This approach is part of a long-term strategy to maintain reliability for daily commuters.
Forming a Rail Reliability Task Force
In response to a noticeable uptick in rail disruptions, authorities established a new task force. This joint effort involves the Land Transport Authority, SMRT, and SBS Transit, focusing on identifying components needing replacement or increased maintenance.
The task force has been activated following at least 15 reported disruptions within three months, demonstrating a priority on safety and reliability in rail transport.
Looking Ahead
As both rail operators invest in advanced technologies and proactive maintenance strategies, Singapore aims to solidify its reputation for providing a reliable transport network. Commuters can look forward to enhanced safety and efficiency as these initiatives unfold.
