Singapore is taking a firm stand against vaping as frontline staff from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Public Transport Operators (PTOs) ramp up enforcement. Recent operations at MRT stations, especially Bishan, have caught around 60 offenders since revamped efforts began in August.
Enhanced Security Measures
To tackle the rising trend of vaping, security personnel have been empowered to seize e-vaporisers directly. About 90 per cent of the cases were detected through advanced security screenings, such as X-ray machines and walk-through metal detectors, during random checks.
- Over 60 offenders: Caught in public transport since enforcement began on 18 August.
- 90% detection rate: Attributed to security screenings.
- New penalties: Stricter fines and potential rehabilitation for repeat offenders.
Frontline Stories
Romel Cajandab Sangalla, a senior station manager, shared his insights during a media tour at Bishan MRT station. He recounted a recent incident involving a passenger caught with five vapour devices—a situation he navigated calmly despite initial apprehensions about the man’s reaction.
“I want to make sure our station runs safely and smoothly,” Romel said, emphasising the importance of their role alongside the national effort against vaping.
Engagement with Offenders
Officers like Muhammad Altamis frequently interact with individuals caught in possession of vapes. In one instance, a young man tried to flee after being chosen for a security screening but was quickly apprehended after discarding his device in the bushes.
“I approached him and asked if it was his,” Altamis recounted. “He admitted it, knowing we had surveillance cameras around.”
Community Awareness
Supervisors like Desmond Chi are actively monitoring areas within bus interchanges and MRT stations for potential vapers. They maintain a presence to deter prohibited activities and ensure a vape-free environment.
“It’s all part of our duty,” Desmond remarked, highlighting the cooperative effort in safeguarding public spaces. Regular patrols and informative posters are part of their strategy to educate commuters on the ban against vaping.
Overall Impact
The LTA’s increased vigilance comes as part of a government-wide initiative to combat vaping, extending beyond public transport to include schools and educational institutions. Since September, there has been a noticeable rise in penalties for vape-related offences, underscoring the seriousness of this initiative.
As enforcement efforts continue, the collaboration among various stakeholders aims to foster a healthier, vape-free environment in Singapore.
