Surge in Suicide Rates Among Adults Aged 30-39: SOS Reports 2024 Data

SINGAPORE — A recent report from the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) reveals that a total of 314 suicide deaths were recorded in the country in 2024. Disturbingly, this figure highlights a significant rise among adults aged 30 to 39, reflecting ongoing societal pressures.

Concerning Trends in Suicide Rates

This year marks the sixth consecutive year that suicide remains the leading cause of death for youths aged 10 to 29. Of the total reported suicides, a notable 64.3% — or 202 cases — involved males. The suicide rate currently stands at 5.91 per 100,000 residents.

  • Age Group Most Affected: Adults aged 30 to 39 exhibited the largest increase, with deaths rising from 43 in 2023 to 75 in 2024.
  • Gender Breakdown: 202 males and 112 females lost their lives to suicide this year.
  • Context of the Numbers: Provisional data indicates a decrease of 2.5% in total suicides in 2024 compared to the finalised figure of 434 for 2023, which saw an alarming increase from an initial estimate of 322.

Understanding the Underlying Issues

According to SOS, individuals in the 30 to 39 age bracket often face a multitude of pressures, spanning family obligations, job security, and mental health challenges. These concerns, alarming in nature, were echoed by those reaching out through SOS’ 24-hour hotline and text services.

Community Support and Ongoing Initiatives

In response to these troubling statistics, SOS is committed to enhancing support systems. Senior Minister of State for Education, Dr Janil Puthucheary, emphasised the importance of community collaboration in tackling mental health crises, stating:

“Each represents an individual and a family struggling with a tragedy. We are determined to keep striving to reduce the number of suicides.”

Moreover, SOS has trained over 6,000 individuals through its Be A Samaritan programme, aimed at equipping participants with the skills to recognise signs of distress. The programme has recently expanded to include a junior version, focusing on youth aged 14 to 16.

Reaching Out for Help

In 2024, SOS provided in-person counselling services to 1,112 individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts or those affected by the loss of loved ones to suicide. If you or someone you know is in need of help, don’t hesitate to reach out.
