Tragic Loss in Clementi: Community Mourns Grassroots Volunteer Winson Khoo
The Clementi community is in shock following the tragic death of Winson Khoo, a dedicated grassroots volunteer, who was fatally wounded on 21 October 2024. The attack took place at Block 311B Clementi Avenue 4, allegedly at the hands of Toh Chee Hong, 50, with whom Khoo had a prior acquaintance.
A Community Champion
According to Sim Ann, Member of Parliament for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Khoo was an enthusiastic figure within the Trivelis estate. Since joining the Trivelis Residents’ Network in 2017, he swiftly rose to the position of vice-chairman in late 2022. His commitment extended beyond titles, as he actively supported residents by assisting with everything from Wi-Fi repairs to offering comfort during wake services.
A Family’s Heartbreak
Khoo’s sudden passing has left his family devastated. His mother, expressing her sorrow, described him as a familial pillar who would regularly visit her, bringing his wife and their two sons along. “My son treated us very well and never denied our requests. I’m extremely sad,” she shared, tears in her eyes.
Community Tributes
Residents have taken to the Trivelis residents’ chat group to express their grief. Messages pouring in reflect how Khoo was loved for his selfless nature—supporting neighbours with various needs. One tribute noted, “He often took it upon himself to serve the community and sacrificed his personal family time.” His close friend recollected him as a helpful person who went out of his way to assist with tasks, even simple repairs in residents’ homes.
The Legal Proceedings
In the wake of this tragedy, Toh Chee Hong was charged with murder. According to local authorities, if found guilty, he could face the death penalty—an outcome that underscores the severity of the crime.
A Lasting Impact
Winson Khoo’s legacy as a community volunteer will not be forgotten. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the lives he touched, and the sentiments shared by residents showcase the profound impact he had within the Clementi community.
