In a poignant moment for the Catholic community in Singapore, Archbishop Emeritus Nicholas Chia passed away on 17 December 2024 at the age of 86. His death was confirmed by Cardinal William Goh via a heartfelt post on social media, stating that Chia ‘passed away peacefully’ at St Theresa’s Home.
A Life of Service
Chia was the first Singapore-born leader of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese, serving as archbishop from 2001 until his retirement in May 2013. Cardinal Goh reflected on Chia’s legacy, noting that he led with compassion and dedication for nearly twelve years, during which he left an indelible mark.

His Contributions to the Church
Before becoming Archbishop, Chia had a pivotal role in establishing the Singapore Pastoral Institute (SPI), a cornerstone for pastoral training in Singapore. His ordination was a grand affair attended by dignitaries, including then-President S R Nathan, alongside thousands of faithful, showcasing the deep respect he commanded.
Chia’s journey began humbly in an attap house in Hougang, where he grew up in a devout Catholic family. He often described his childhood as ‘simple but happy’.
Recent Health Concerns
In a distressing turn of events, the Archdiocese reported earlier in December that Chia was critically ill. The community rallied around him, inviting prayers for his recovery. His health had been fragile since a serious fall in February 2014, which resulted in a brain haemorrhage, leaving him in a coma for weeks.
Tributes and Remembrance
As plans for a public memorial and funeral proceedings are prepared, tributes from both local and international communities continue to pour in, celebrating a man known for his humility and unwavering faith. His impact on the Catholic Church and society will be remembered fondly.
