Ukraine’s Judicial Defenders: From Courts to Combat Against Russian Aggression

As Russia’s military strain becomes evident, a remarkable group of individuals is stepping up to serve their country not just within the courtroom but also on the battlefield. Ukrainian judges like Vladyslav Tsukurov are exemplifying resilience and dedication amid the ongoing conflict.

Judges as Defenders

By day, these judges oversee civil and criminal cases in Kyiv and its surrounding regions, but come nightfall, they take on a different role. Tsukurov, alongside fellow judges and public servants, joins a volunteer defence unit called “Mriya,” which means “Dream” in Ukrainian. Their mission? To spot and fend off Russian drones threatening their homeland.

  • Vladyslav Tsukurov: A judge by profession, he felt compelled to join the fight after his daughters chose to stay in Ukraine.
  • Volunteer Units: Comprised mostly of judges, law enforcement officials, and public servants, these units seek to protect the skies from drone attacks.

Challenges of Wartime Judiciary

The ongoing conflict has left Ukraine’s judiciary understaffed, exacerbating the difficulties faced by legal professionals. “Lately, air-raid alarms have been ringing all night,” said Leonid Merzlyi, a municipal judge who also takes part in defence duties. This dual role often leads to extreme fatigue, making it hard to balance judicial responsibilities with the demands of warfare.

Response to Russian Offensives

As the weather grows colder, Russian forces seem to intensify their attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. Reports indicate that these assaults have targeted towns and cities, pushing territorial defence units into high alert. The relentless pressure underscores the bravery of the nation’s defenders, both in the courtroom and on the frontlines.

In the words of Tsukurov, “We are all judges from different courts, and we find a common language. And I believe this is one of the best teams.” Such camaraderie and sense of purpose unite these dedicated individuals in their quest to protect their country.
