As wildfires continue to devastate parts of Los Angeles, firefighters are racing against time to contain the blazes that have wreaked havoc in the region. The situation remains dire, with reports highlighting both the extent of the damage and the efforts being made to protect lives and property.
Current Wildfire Conditions
On Thursday, 16 January 2024, Los Angeles experienced persistent dry conditions and gusty winds, heightening the wildfire threat. The National Weather Service indicated wind speeds ranging from 25 to 40 km/h, with gusts potentially reaching up to 64 km/h. Fortunately, a shift in the wind direction is expected later in the day, bringing relief with higher humidity levels.
Firefighting Efforts
- Approximately 8,500 firefighters from across the western United States, Canada, and Mexico are battling the flames.
- Containment levels for the Palisades Fire reached 21%, covering an area of 96 sq km, while the Eaton Fire was at 45% containment across 57 sq km.
- Aerial support is involved, with air tankers and helicopters deployed to drop water and fire retardants in critical areas.
Impact on Communities

Fleming, it would be “extremely foolish” to attempt to move the collection during such risks.
