Workers’ Party Revamps Teams for 2024 Elections: Pritam Singh Leads Aljunied, Faisal Manap Moves to Tampines

As Singapore gears up for its upcoming elections, the Workers’ Party (WP) has unveiled its refreshed team line-up, showcasing a blend of experience and new talents. Pritam Singh, the party’s secretary-general, will continue to lead the five-member team for Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC), while Faisal Manap shifts to contest in Tampines GRC.

WP’s Aljunied GRC Squads Up

The Aljunied team comprises Pritam Singh, Sylvia Lim, Gerald Giam, alongside newcomers Fadli Fawzi and Kenneth Tiong. Singh has emphasised that every vote counts in this crucial election, especially given the constituency’s history of razor-thin margins. “Every single vote counts,” he reiterated during a media briefing on 23 April 2024.

Faisal Manap Takes Lead in Tampines

Faisal Manap’s relocation to Tampines GRC comes as a fulfilment of his longstanding wish to represent the constituency, according to Singh. “He’s been asking me to consider that proposal for quite some time, and he succeeded… he is proud to lead the Tampines team,” Singh stated.

  • Faisal Manap: Former Aljunied MP, now leading the WP team in Tampines GRC.
  • New Candidates in WP Team: Jimmy Tan, Ong Lue Ping, Eileen Chong, and Michael Thng.
  • Opponents: Facing tough competition from the People’s Action Party (PAP) led by Masagos Zulkifli.

PAP’s Counter Strategy

The PAP is fielding a five-member team in Aljunied GRC, led by marketing director Chan Hui Yuh. The PAP has campaigned on being a refreshing change for residents, noting the 14-year gap since their last representation in the constituency.

Electoral Landscape and WP’s Strategy

In the last General Election, the WP achieved a significant victory in Aljunied GRC, securing 59.93% of the votes. With new boundaries in play, both parties are preparing intensively for what is anticipated to be a fiercely competitive election.

  • Electoral Boundaries: Minimal changes with only minor district shifts affecting constituencies.
  • WP’s Reach: Contesting in a total of eight constituencies.

As the electoral battle heats up, both parties are ensuring their messaging resonates with voters. WP’s approach remains to advocate for a balanced political representation in Parliament.
