Yoon Suk Yeol Vows Strong Response Against North Korea’s Nuclear Threats

SEOUL – In a recent interview, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed a firm stance on the nation’s defence strategies against potential nuclear threats from North Korea. Speaking with Newsweek, he assured that the alliance with the United States stands ready to counter any nuclear aggression.

Preparedness Against Nuclear Attacks

President Yoon stated, “I believe that it would be irrational for them to decide to wage a nuclear attack against the Republic of Korea. Should they do so, the nuclear-based ROK-US alliance will immediately strike North Korea with the US nuclear weapon.” This declaration underscores the seriousness of the threat posed by North Korea, particularly after its recent military displays.

On 31 October 2023, North Korea tested the Hwasong-19, a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile, escalating concerns regarding its nuclear capabilities.

Defence Capabilities

Yoon highlighted South Korea’s advancements in both defensive and offensive military capabilities, stating, “We have our capabilities, and we are improving our capability to strike the launching point and to intercept their missiles and to strike their command-and-control centres.” This emphasis on readiness mirrors ongoing efforts to reinforce security measures against North Korea’s evolving arsenal.

Avoiding Nuclear Armament

Despite the pressing security environment, President Yoon reiterated South Korea’s commitment to not pursuing its own nuclear weapons. He cautioned that such a move could trigger a nuclear arms race in the region, prompting other nations, including Japan and Taiwan, to consider developing their arsenals.

Strengthening Alliances

Yoon’s remarks come as the South Korea-US alliance seeks to enhance its cooperative strategies through the Nuclear Consultative Group, which was established under the Washington Declaration agreed upon during a summit with US President Joe Biden in April 2023. This collaboration aims to bolster deterrence against Pyongyang’s nuclear threats.
