Tragic Workplace and Road Accidents Claim Lives in Singapore

Two tragic incidents last week have drawn attention to safety concerns in both road and workplace environments in Singapore. Authorities are now investigating these unfortunate events, highlighting the need for stricter safety measures.

Fatal Cyclist and Bus Collision

On 7 January 2024, a 61-year-old cyclist lost his life after being struck by a bus at a zebra crossing in Jurong West around 7.20 am. The private bus, driven by a 44-year-old man, was turning from Pioneer Road North into a slip road along Jurong West Avenue 4 when the collision occurred.

  • The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
  • A police tent was later set up at the zebra crossing as investigations began.
  • The bus driver is currently under investigation for driving without reasonable consideration for other road users, which resulted in the cyclist’s death.

Workplace Death at Construction Site

A separate incident took place on 2 January 2024, where a 29-year-old Indian construction worker died after being hit by a concrete pump hose at a construction site in Tengah at approximately 8.40 pm. This occurred during the casting works at the Plantation Edge I and II BTO project.

  • The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) confirmed they are investigating the incident, emphasising the necessity of uncompromised workplace safety.
  • The construction worker was rushed to Gleneagles Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
  • The contractor, Keong Hong Construction, has pledged to support the worker’s family and review safety protocols to prevent future incidents.

Call for Increased Safety Measures

Senior Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad addressed Parliament on 7 January, urging heightened vigilance regarding safety protocols, especially with the approach of the Chinese New Year, when construction activities intensify. He announced upcoming measures which include:

  • Regular inspections of construction sites.
  • Mandatory installation of video surveillance at larger projects.

As we reflect on these tragic events, the importance of road and workplace safety in Singapore cannot be overstated. Authorities must now act decisively to implement strategies to mitigate risks and protect lives.
