SINGAPORE: The abrupt closure of Wan Yang Health Product and Foot Reflexology Centre has left loyal customers in disbelief as they scramble to reclaim their unutilised prepaid packages, which total more than S$29,000.
On 24 November 2024, Melvin Yong, president of the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE), confirmed that 15 complaints had already been filed against the massage chain. Customers were caught off guard as they had been reassured by staff just days prior to the closure.
Customers Left in the Lurch
Many long-term patrons shared their frustration on social media, with some claiming they had been encouraged to renew packages shortly before the closure. Ms Mun Wai Ping, a devoted customer of over 10 years, recounted an appointment on 14 November where staff urged her to sign up for a new package, despite her having sessions left on her current ones.
- Number of Complaints: 15
- Total Unutilised Amount: More than S$29,000
- Reported Losses in First Half of 2025: S$108,000 in the beauty and wellness sector
Formal Liquidation Proceedings
A notice placed at Wan Yang’s various outlets announced the cessation of operations “effective immediately” and outlined that formal liquidation proceedings would commence shortly. Customers were advised to contact appointed liquidators for any outstanding issues.
Consumer Protections Called for
Yong has expressed serious concern over prepayment losses within the beauty and wellness sector. To combat this issue, CASE proposes a mandatory five-day cooling-off period for prepaid package purchases, which would give consumers better recourse against sudden business changes. The current rules allow refunds only for CaseTrust-accredited establishments.
Reactions and Observations
Customers like Daniel noted that while the establishment seemed to operate normally—such as maintaining friendly interactions with clients—there were subtle signs indicating possible trouble, including staffing changes and a lack of available appointment slots.
“There are a lot of such centres that come and go, but Wan Yang is one of the more established ones,” Daniel remarked, highlighting the chain’s previously good reputation.
Support for Affected Workers
Union officials have stated that some staff are union members, and assistance will be provided to these individuals following the business closure. The Ministry of Manpower has also been approached for comments regarding the employment fallout.
