Taiwan’s Lai Ching-te Prepares for Controversial Pacific Tour Amid Rising Tensions with China

As Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te prepares for his first official trip since taking office, military tensions in the region are escalating. Ahead of his departure on 30 November 2024, Taiwan conducted an air defence drill to bolster its readiness, amid predictions of Chinese military exercises in response to his journey.

Military Drills and Readiness

On 28 November, Taiwan’s air force simulated a two-hour air defence operation, utilising aircraft, ships, and missile systems. This exercise aimed to “strengthen the overall effectiveness of air defence operations and to test the response and engagement procedures of the air defence forces.” According to Taiwan’s military, the drill is part of routine training to enhance defence resilience against potential threats.

China’s Reaction

China has vowed to oppose any moves towards separatism, referring to President Lai as a “separatist” and cautioning the United States against sending what it calls “wrong signals” regarding Taiwan independence. Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian stated that the Chinese military is ready to thwart external interference and protect national sovereignty.

  • 19 Chinese aircraft, including J-16 fighters, were spotted near Taiwan on the same day of the drill.
  • China has conducted two major military exercises around Taiwan in 2024.

Lai’s Upcoming Itinerary

President Lai’s itinerary includes stops in the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau, as well as two nights in Hawaii and one night in Guam. His trip is significant as it includes closed-door meetings with think tanks and engagements with the Taiwanese community abroad.

Statements from Taiwan Officials

Taiwan’s presidential office warned that if China uses Lai’s trip as justification for military actions, it would be a serious provocation, undermining regional peace. The government has also expressed concerns about Chinese surveillance balloons spotted near its waters, which it views as an intimidation tactic.

With Lai’s overseas venture approaching, the region watches closely to see how the delicate balance of cross-strait relations unfolds amidst increasing military posturing from both sides.
