SINGAPORE, November 2024 — This week has seen two separate fires in Housing and Development Board (HDB) blocks, leading to several hospitalisations. The incidents have raised concerns over fire safety, particularly involving personal mobility devices.
Ang Mo Kio Incident
On the evening of 4 November, a fire erupted at Block 641, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, around 11:15 PM. According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the blaze involved a personal mobility aid located in the lift lobby’s eighth floor. Firefighters swiftly put out the fire using a water jet.
Four individuals were assessed for smoke inhalation and subsequently taken to Singapore General Hospital. In response to the emergency, approximately 200 residents were evacuated from the affected block as a precautionary measure. The SCDF is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Yishun Fire
Just a few days later, on 7 November, another fire broke out in a flat at Block 128 Yishun Street 11 at about 1:20 PM. This incident involved a second-floor unit where a bedroom was ablaze upon SCDF’s arrival. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire and two residents were taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital after being assessed for smoke inhalation.
Preliminary investigations indicate the fire likely started from a lighted material in the bedroom. Thankfully, three occupants had already evacuated before the fire brigade arrived, which helped to prevent further injuries. About 50 individuals were evacuated from the building following safety protocols.
Fire Safety Considerations
- The SCDF has highlighted the risks associated with motorised devices, especially when they are modified or improperly maintained.
- Charging equipment must always be original and suitable for the device to reduce fire hazards.
- For safety tips on charging and using personal mobility devices, resources are available through the Land Transport Authority and SCDF’s online information pack.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring fire safety within their homes.
