Max Maeder Celebrates World Sailing Award by Serving Curry Puffs in Katong

Maximilian Maeder, Singapore’s 18-year-old kitefoiling sensation, is serving up more than just victories this year. Following his win at the 2024 World Sailing Awards, he kept his promise and spent a day working at the beloved Soon Soon Huat Curry Puff stall in Katong.

A Promise to His Fans

Maeder, who clinched the inaugural Young World Sailor of the Year award on 5 November, expressed his excitement during the ceremony held at Chijmes Hall. He stated, “I’m a man of my word. I’ll be there as early as I can, and as long as I can.” His commitment not only to sailing but also to his fans shone through.

First Day at the Stall

On 7 November, Maeder opened the shutters of the renowned curry puff stall at 7:30 am, where he was greeted by a long line of eager customers. Arriving an hour early to familiarise himself with the operations, he even enjoyed a chicken curry puff himself before the doors opened.

  • Maeder’s personal connection to the stall: “I often come here with my family and friends to eat their curry puffs. I think they’re delicious.”
  • Support from fans: Some arrived as early as 5 am to catch a glimpse of the sailing star at work.
  • Positive feedback from stall owner: Zhang Meilan praised Maeder’s performance after just 15 minutes of training, awarding him nine out of ten points.

Inspiring Young Athletes

Among the supporters was 15-year-old swimmer Fu Shizao, who shared how inspirational Maeder’s achievements were for young athletes. “As a swimmer, I am inspired by his contributions to Singapore,” she stated.

A Milestone for Singapore

Maeder’s triumph is significant for Singapore, being the first time a Singaporean has won a World Sailing Awards trophy, according to the Singapore Sailing Team. This win follows a remarkable year that included a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics and victories at several international championships.

True to the spirit of success and community, Maeder’s curry puff gig isn’t just a fun publicity stunt—it’s a heartfelt gesture connecting him with his roots and fans.
