As the countdown to the 2025 General Election heats up, the People’s Action Party (PAP) has unveiled its new slates for both Marine Parade-Braddell Heights and Nee Soon GRCs. With well-known ministers and fresh faces in the mix, the party is gearing up to strengthen its representation across Singapore.
Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC Candidates
The PAP announced its candidates for the newly reconstituted Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC on 20 April 2024. Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng, aged 60, will lead a five-member team that showcases a blend of experience and new perspectives.
- Tan See Leng – Minister for Manpower
- Seah Kian Peng – Four-term MP representing Marine Parade
- Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim – Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development
- Tin Pei Ling – Former MP of Macpherson SMC
- Diana Pang – Business development director and grassroots volunteer
Dr Tan expressed his desire for a strong mandate to implement a five-year masterplan that includes new community spaces like a water park and plaza.
Emphasis on Diversity and Governance
Tin highlighted the team’s diverse strengths in age, gender, culture, and profession, stating they are well-positioned to represent the voters of Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC and Mountbatten SMC. The team aims to connect closely with residents, with Diana Pang sharing insights about her recent engagement with the community.
In light of recent changes, former MP Tan Chuan Jin’s resignation did raise some eyebrows, but Dr Tan reassured the team’s commitment to grassroots initiatives remains steadfast.
New Faces in Nee Soon GRC
Meanwhile, over in Nee Soon GRC, Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam, who has been in Parliament since 1988, will lead a fresh team composed of four new faces. During an interview with Lianhe Zaobao on 19 April 2024, he confirmed these new selections.
- Goh Hanyan – Former MDDI Director
- Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi – Former Nominated Member of Parliament
- Jackson Lam – Former PAP Branch Chairman for Hougang
- Lee Hui Ying – Director at Temasek Foundation
Shanmugam acknowledged that some of the previous candidates would not be contesting due to professional commitments that require relocation.
Continuing Challenges and Opportunities
The PAP, which secured Marine Parade GRC with 57.76% of the votes in the 2020 election, faces potential competition from the Workers’ Party again. As electoral boundaries shift, the stakes are high for both sides.
The political landscape in Singapore continues to evolve, and with new candidates stepping up, the 2025 General Election could be a game changer for several constituencies.
