Singaporeans Can Use SG Culture Pass Credits for SingLit Books Starting 1 March 2024

As part of an exciting new initiative, Singaporeans can now use their SG Culture Pass credits to explore local literature starting 1 March 2024. This move aims to encourage reading and promote Singaporean authors in a nation where literacy and culture are held in high esteem.

What’s Available?

Approximately 1,500 eligible SingLit titles will be available across nine participating bookstores, which have around 40 outlets islandwide. These titles include:

  • Fiction
  • Poetry
  • Plays
  • Literary short essays

All works must be authored by Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents and can be found by looking for the official SG Culture Pass sticker on the cover.

Using Your Credits

The SG Culture Pass launched last September, providing Singaporeans aged eighteen and above with S$100 (US$78) in credits to offset costs for local arts and heritage events. Through this new feature, credits can now also be applied to physical books, although e-books or online purchases aren’t included.

Bookstores will offer a variety of titles, with examples such as Nine Yard Sarees by Prasanthi Ram and Grandma’s Tiger by Alan John making the list. If your credits don’t cover the total price, fear not—you can pay the remaining balance via other payment methods.

Community Engagement

According to the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), this initiative not only aims to boost local literature sales but also encourages community engagement with our rich tapestry of stories. “With the introduction of book purchases, we hope to encourage more Singaporeans to explore our diverse Singaporean voices and stories,” MCCY stated.

Moreover, credits are valid until 31 December 2028, meaning Singaporeans have plenty of time to make use of this new offering. So, whether you’re a seasoned reader or looking to dive into local literature for the first time, there’s no better time than now.

Upcoming Events

Eligible titles will also be available at various pop-up events and book fairs, including:

  • The World Book Day from 17 to 21 April
  • The Singapore Chinese Book Fair from 17 to 22 April
  • The Asian Festival of Children’s Content Book Fair from 21 to 24 May

As of now, more than S$13.8 million worth of SG Culture Pass credits have been utilised, reflecting a strong interest in local arts.
