As Minister of Finance, Heng made tough decisions, including a Goods and Services Tax hike, underscoring his commitment to balancing the budget while supporting the populace through comprehensive support packages.
Senior Minister Teo’s Legacy
Teo Chee Hean also dedicated over half a century to public service, starting as a navy officer in 1972. Under his tenure as Minister for Defence from 2003 to 2011, he transformed the Singapore Armed Forces and built robust international defence relationships. Key achievements include:
- Establishing the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus).
- Integrating technology into police and civil defence operations.
His leadership in the Ministry of Home Affairs and later contributions in education have left a lasting impact on Singapore’s youth.
Appreciation and Future Aspirations
In his letters, Wong expressed his aspiration to continue the ethos of service instilled by both leaders as they pass on their responsibilities. He noted, ‘We will continue to build on what you have worked so diligently to establish, and bring Singapore onward and upward.’
As both leaders transition into retirement, PM Wong conveyed his best wishes for happiness and fulfilment in this new chapter of their lives.
