Progress on Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link Sets Stage for 2026 Launch

The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project is forging ahead with exciting developments as construction progresses on both sides of the Johor Strait. With the aim to ease congestion at the Causeway, this cross-border rail shuttle service promises a smoother ride for commuters.

Current Status of Construction

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore and Malaysia’s MRT Corporation, significant strides have been made, particularly with over 80% of civil infrastructure works completed in Singapore. On the Malaysian side, this figure is even higher, at about 93%.

  • Completion of marine and land viaducts is nearly done.
  • Remaining works include architectural finishes and key installations such as immigration gates.

Timeline and Next Steps

The installation of rail systems will commence at the end of 2024, joining the connections to Singapore’s MRT network. Specifically, the RTS Link will connect to Woodlands North station on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) starting in 2025.

Enhancing Connectivity

Once operational, the RTS Link is expected to facilitate the transit of up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, covering the 4km stretch in approximately five minutes. The anticipated start date for passenger services is December 2026.

A Symbol of Partnership

Recently, the completion of a critical connecting span—a 17.1-metre long link between the marine viaducts—was marked by officials from both nations. This feature, along with an aesthetic structure symbolising collaboration, highlights the strong ties between Singapore and Malaysia.

Looking Ahead

As work continues, both LTA and MRT Corporation remain committed to ensuring everything proceeds smoothly, with a focus on completion as the deadline approaches. The RTS Link is not just about transportation; it’s a testament to the partnership that Singapore and Malaysia share.
