On 27 November 2024, Seoul was hit by the heaviest November snowfall recorded in over a century, with 16.5 cm accumulating by 7am local time. This significant weather event eclipsed the previous November record of 12.4 cm set back in 1972.
Snowfall Warnings and Impact
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a heavy snow warning, advising residents to refrain from driving and outdoor activities due to hazardous conditions. Such warnings are triggered when snow accumulation exceeds 20 cm in 24 hours.
- Multiple accidents reported as vehicles slid on icy roads.
- No major injuries have been noted despite the treacherous conditions.
- Power outages affected over 150 households around Seoul due to falling trees.
- Main roads faced closures, resulting in severe traffic congestion.
- At least 22 domestic flights were cancelled, with more delays expected.
Weather Analysis
The heavy snowfall is attributed to a pronounced temperature difference between the sea surface and cold air moving down from the north. Youn Ki-han, director at Seoul’s Meteorology Forecast Division, explained, “the strong snow was consistently carried by the westerly winds, pushing it into the Seoul metropolitan area. Snow kept falling in the same areas repeatedly, leading to greater accumulation.”
Additional snowfall of up to 20 cm is anticipated in the coming days, prompting President Yoon Suk Yeol to call on officials to minimise public inconvenience and potential damages caused by the extreme weather.
