Singapore Contributes US$100,000 to Aid Sri Lanka Cyclone Victims

SINGAPORE: In a significant gesture of solidarity, the Singapore government has announced it will contribute US$100,000 (S$129,000) to support the Singapore Red Cross‘ (SRC) public fundraising efforts for humanitarian aid in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah, which has wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka.

This financial support will bolster the SRC’s own commitment of S$50,000 aimed at addressing the immediate needs of affected communities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) shared this update in a statement on 12 December 2024.

Impact of Cyclone Ditwah

The cyclone, which struck Sri Lanka two weeks ago, has been described as one of the most devastating weather events the island has faced this century. It triggered widespread flooding and landslides, impacting over two million people—approximately 10 per cent of the nation’s population.

  • Death Toll: At least 639 lives have been lost, with about 200 individuals still unaccounted for.
  • Damage: The government of Sri Lanka estimates that around US$7 billion will be needed for rebuilding homes, roads, and industries devastated by the storm.
  • Temporary Shelters: Approximately 200,000 people have sought refuge in 1,275 shelters due to ongoing heavy rains and floods.

International Response

In response to the disaster, Sri Lankan authorities have appealed for international assistance, affirming that they cannot manage the reconstruction alone. United Nations representatives have called for international donors to aid in providing necessary support.

Both Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan have conveyed their condolences through letters to Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath, emphasising Singapore’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka during this challenging time.
