Singapore’s Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing Announces Acquisition of Gulfstream G550 Aircraft

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with the acquisition of three Gulfstream G550 maritime surveillance aircraft. This addition was unveiled by Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing during the Ministry of Defence’s (Mindef) Committee of Supply debate held on 27 February 2024.

Boosting Maritime Surveillance

Chan explained that the new Gulfstream G550s will replace the ageing Fokker 50s and improve early warning systems for potential maritime threats. “This supports the SAF’s mission in safeguarding Singapore’s sea lines of communication as part of our maritime security surveillance network,” he stated.

Aircraft Specifications

  • Length: 29.8 m
  • Wingspan: 28.5 m
  • Crew Capacity: Two pilots and up to six crew members

Equipped with advanced radar systems, electro-optical and infrared cameras, and communication tools, the G550s can effectively detect and identify various maritime threats.

Complementing Existing Fleet

The G550s will work in conjunction with four Boeing P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, which are expected to enter service in the early 2030s. Each aircraft plays a crucial role in strengthening Singapore’s surveillance capabilities over its vast maritime domain.

Future Developments

Chan also highlighted that the SAF plans to use unmanned platforms, integrating them with new naval concepts. The Republic of Singapore Navy’s multi-role combat vessel (MRCV) will serve as a mothership for these unmanned operations, with the second vessel expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026.

Commitment to Defence Spending

In alignment with Singapore’s defence strategy, Chan stated that the Ministry of Defence aims to maintain a steady and disciplined approach to defence expenditure, anticipating growth in spending to correlate with GDP growth, barring any major shocks. This commitment reflects a robust dedication to ensuring national security amidst evolving global challenges.
