SINGAPORE: A recent incident on the MRT tracks between Simei and Tanah Merah stations has led SMRT to file a police report after a video of the event went viral. The footage, which captured a person trespassing on the tracks, raised significant safety concerns for both passengers and the transport operator.
What Happened?
The video was shot in an area currently undergoing construction for new viaducts that will link to the upcoming East Coast Integrated Depot.
- A person filmed an oncoming train full of passengers.
- After the train passed, the individual crossed the tracks.
SMRT Trains’ president, Lam Sheau Kai, expressed deep concern about the incident, stating:
“We take a serious view of this incident, as track trespassing poses severe safety risks.”
According to Mr Lam, such reckless behaviour endangers not only the individual involved but also other commuters. He highlighted that in emergency situations, applying brakes could lead to injuries for passengers on board.
Safety Concerns Amplified
The operator is actively cooperating with the police as investigations are underway. SMRT emphasised that issues of safety are paramount, and incidents like this can disrupt services, affecting numerous commuters.
As construction continues to improve the infrastructure, both SMRT and the authorities urge the public to adhere strictly to safety protocols to prevent any further dangerous encounters.
