Transport Vouchers and CNY Bank Notes: Key Updates for Singaporeans

As we move into 2024, Singaporeans have plenty to look forward to with the upcoming public transport vouchers and the availability of fit-for-gifting bank notes for Chinese New Year.

Public Transport Vouchers Application Opens

Starting from 20 January 2024, lower-income households can submit their applications for public transport vouchers (PTV). Each eligible household—those with a monthly per capita income of no more than $1,800—will receive a voucher valued at $60 to help ease their commuting costs. These vouchers come at a crucial time, especially after bus and train fares saw an increase of up to 10 cents per journey starting 27 December 2023.

Eligibility and Application Process

  • Applications are open from 20 January to 31 October 2024.
  • Interested households can apply online or visit their local Community Centres/Clubs.
  • Those in need of additional support can also submit applications, regardless of income eligibility.

According to the Ministry of Transport and the People’s Association, the vouchers are usable for topping up fare cards or purchasing monthly passes, valid for redemption until 31 March 2027. Households will receive notifications via post or SMS if they were among those who received vouchers in the previous year.

Fit-for-Gifting Bank Notes for Chinese New Year

As we gear up for the festive period, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has announced that bookings for fit-for-gifting bank notes will begin on 27 January 2024. This year’s Chinese New Year falls on 17 and 18 February, and Singaporeans are encouraged to consider environmentally-friendly options by opting for ‘fit’ notes or electronic hongbao (e-hongbao).

Key Details on CNY Bank Notes

  • Customers can start making online bookings for fit or new notes from 27 January via their banks’ mobile apps.
  • Pre-booked notes can be collected at bank branches from 3 February.
  • Walk-ins are allowed only for customers aged 60 and above or persons with disabilities.

A survey revealed that around two-thirds of local residents are open to receiving fit notes, showing a growing acceptance of these environmentally-conscious alternatives. Last year alone, over 16 million fit notes were exchanged—making a significant environmental impact.

Mark your calendars and get ready to make the most of these initiatives designed to support the community!
